Visit Sataplia Cave and Nature Reserve
Drive towards the The Kutaisi and visit Sataplia Reserve. This place has preserved a prehistoric nature with wooden relics, labyrinths of karst caves and fossilized tracks of dinosaurs that lived there in the Mesozoic era, 160 mln years ago. “Sataplia” means “honey place” in Georgian. The naming is related to the fact that in ancient times wild bees nested in numerous hollows of these caves and the primitive people were used to treat themselves with honey. The karst caves are equipped with backlight and acoustic system that will add up to your impressions from Sataplia brightness and make it lifelike. The central point of the touristic part of the labyrinth is a “Stone heart”. A huge heart shape stalagmite attracts romanticists, who make a wish near the “sculpture”. Next to the “Stone heart” is a hall for patients suffering from bronchial asthma. The permanent temperature in the caves is approximately 14 degrees Celcius and cave has a healing air.
Continue tour and visit Prometheus Cave
Drive to the Prometheus cave with numerous stalactites and stalagmites. The cave was discovered in 1984 and was almost immediately developed as a show cave. Kumistavi is the biggest cave in Georgia. Although only one tenth is open for tourists, it takes about an hour to explore it. Inside there are underground lakes and rivers. Surrounded by a 3km long specifically designed landscape area, Kumistavi cave is one of the most touristy spots of Georgia. It is a unique experience to feel the underworld atmosphere in all its glory and colors. Tourists may choose between walking tours along the 1600 meters route, and the boat ride along the underground river. Visitors are amazed with breathtaking views of stalactites, stalagmites, petrified waterfalls, underground rivers and lakes of the cave.
